Based in Abercarn, I run my own Educational and Wellbeing Service, part of which supports children and adults with anxiety due to their additional needs such as autism, dyslexia, depression and ADHD. This service has proved to be successful and many clients have benefited from my support.
As a qualified PTUK play therapist, I am able to use a range of strategies to help children process difficult feelings, frustrations and trauma. I am influenced by Carl Rogers which means I offer a non-judgemental space and accept the child’s experiences, background and culture. My sessions are also informed by psychoanalysis, meaning that I use creative mediums to allow the child to express their past trauma and experiences so they can resolve their difficulties.
My background as a SENCO and dyslexia specialist means I am particularly sensitive to how difficulty with learning can sometimes contribute to emotional difficulties and I have a holistic/integrative approach to understanding the client’s emotional challenges.
I have undertaken Sand Tray training in addition to my Play Therapy Diploma and am skilled in helping clients understand the energy and meaning of their creation if necessary. I am particularly skilled in using therapeutic stories, drama and art to support children.
The language used in sessions is vital in therapy and I pay careful attention to how students verbalise their problems using this to inform my practice.
My wide experience means I am able to identify needs and provide the support a client needs to process their difficulties. If necessary I can signpost other services which may support the child alongside play therapy.
